Choosing the Right Design for Wing Tattoos

Wing tattoos are widely used in the tattooing world. This type of tattoo has become a symbol for men and women who want to express their faiths (i.e. angels for Christians), but do not want to obviously express them. Wing tattoos usually convey deeper meanings and are suited to the more spiritual group of people.

Wings which are that of birds, butterflies, and angels are often symbolic of the more heavenly aspects of life like peace, harmony, freedom, and unity. Most often than not, various types of wing tattoos are worn by women. Wings which are that of bats or dragons may symbolize evil and death. These are perfect for metal heads who want to convey a wild side. These “devilish” wing tattoos may not always have a negative meaning. Some of them have deeper definitions.

A lot of individuals opt to have wing tattoos because they want to honor a friend or a family member who passed away, usually due to a tragic death. These wing tattoos serve as reminders for the untimely death of the person being honored. They also symbolize the soul being freed to eternal bliss. Most of the time with these tattoos, they are inscribed with the name or initials of the late person. A child is often represented by a smaller tattoo while older loved ones are honored with large ones.

Christianity is the largest religion that does not have any law against tattoos. A majority of Christians, which mostly consists of Catholics, believe in the presence of guardian angels. Thus, some of these people put angel wing tattoos on their skin to symbolize that guarding entity that they feel is with them. A number of these individuals have survived serious illnesses deemed incurable or freak accidents that were almost fatal. Some other religions also have deities that have wings. In this case, the choice of the design would depend on the bearer’s religion and/or preference.

The type and style of wing tattoos varies from person to person.  They are very dependent on personal preferences. There are people who even prefer to have single feathers inked on them, while some opt to have fully feathered wing tattoos with intricate details. The wings can also serve as outlines for another design that the wearer wants to put more emphasis on.

Wing tattoos are not that common. However, having this type of tattoo can really give a person a deeper feeling of satisfaction with the symbology that is represented.
